A lost or stolen British passport has to be reported to HM Passport Office so it can be cancelled on the record. You can do this online through GOV.UK, or on a paper LS01 notification form. Cancelling is what stops the passport being used fraudulently, and it reduces identity-theft risk.
Go to your local SAPS station, where you can obtain a case number and get the report reference. A police report may support a stolen-passport replacement and the cancellation record, and it is useful evidence if the passport is later misused.
British consulates deal with emergency travel documents, which are a different and much more restricted product. Single journey, heavy limits, and refused or retained by many destinations. They are not a replacement passport.

Local guidance
Domestic South African travel and daily identification generally run on a South African ID book or smart ID card if you hold one. If you do not, and many British citizens here do not, the passport was your primary identity document, and its loss is felt immediately at banks, offices and domestic check-in.
International departure is impossible without it.
Report a theft at your nearest SAPS station and obtain a case number. Keep it: you will need it for the replacement and for any dispute if the passport is later misused. Given the value of a British passport on the illicit market, prompt cancellation matters more here than almost anywhere — it is what reduces identity-theft risk.

Since 25 February 2026, British and Irish citizens cannot get a UK ETA, so you are expected to prove your citizenship with a valid British passport.

For everyday life and travel inside South Africa, a South African ID book or smart ID card will usually carry you. What you cannot do is travel to the UK, or leave South Africa internationally, without a valid British passport. If you have travel booked, start the replacement now rather than close to the date. This affects domestic flights within South Africa less than international travel, but always check with your carrier.
Your right to be in South Africa is not lost with the passport — the underlying permission still exists on the local record. Contact the Department of Home Affairs and ask what evidence they can provide or reissue while your replacement is in progress. Keep your cancellation reference and police report: authorities generally want to see that the passport was properly reported. We work to your timeline so the gap is as short as possible.
